Groundwork: With Stalker in the Eternal City

The seminar week will bring us to Rome. Guided by the Roman activist group Stalker (Lorenzo Romito, Giulia Fiocca) and accompanied by the artist Lara Almarcegui we will walk along travertine quarries, observe the extraction of volcanic matter, follow the origins of concrete, meet groups of refugees in a squat, see ruins of unbuilt shopping centers, explore the Museo delle Civiltà that is waiting for a new purpose, and enjoy the beauty of secret lakes, unexpected landscapes, and the gardens of Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este. Andrei Tarkovski’s movie Stalker (1979) in our mind, Marguerite Yourcenar’s Memoirs of Hadrian (1951) in our pocket and the daily news about the politics in Italy and Europe on our phones we will learn about the complex situation and history of Rome and have access to some of its currently contested sites. We will do many walks, live at the periphery (yet with direct access to the subway) and join the celebration at Ararat Kurdish cultural center on Saturday night.
