Seminar
Attitude! Manifests in Art, Architecture and Design

Seminar History of the Art and Architecture (051-0321-11)
Organizer: Chair of Prof. Ursprung
Lecturers: Prof. Dr. Philip Ursprung, Dr. Ruedi Baur

The seminar deals with the role of the manifesto in the history of art, architecture, and design, since the early 20th century.

Modernity is marked by artistic conflicts. Manifestos and statements mark esthetic difference. They stand at the borderline between the realm of culture and the realm of politics. Since the 1960s, manifestoes are disappearing. Consensus seems to be more important than controversy. Critical theory is absorbed by the interview. Meaning is negotiated, not defined. The seminar outlines a history of the manifesto and asks how and where specific positions in the realm of visual culture are articulated.
